Frequently described as one of the plays on which
modern day theatre is founded, Sheridan’s classic
comedy satirises the manners and affectations of the
well-to-do class in the 1700’s. Set in Bath, the
convoluted story centres on two main characters
(Lydia and Jack) in search of perfect love. The path
of true love rarely runs smooth as Jack and Lydia
discover with the introduction of various other
suitors. Enter Jeff as Bob Acres, a wonderfully
buffoonish country gentleman. The play is full of
furious fathers, interfering guardians, dandies and
duels. The Rivals enjoyed a three week run at the
Belgrade Theatre, Coventry in January 1972 and also
starred Amanda Reiss and the incomparable Peggy
Mount as Mrs Malaprop. |
