In what
the critics described as a brilliant production of
Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker at the Belgrade
Theatre, Coventry in February 1970, Jeff’s portrayal
of the simple benefactor Aston was a beautifully
sensitive and restrained performance. The play is
often compared to Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and
relies heavily on the effectiveness of language as a
means to communicate. It tells the story of two
brothers Aston and Mick who live a strained
existence under the same roof. The situation is
worsened when Aston invites a tramp, Davies to share
their home. Davies ultimately assumes the role of
caretaker but his selfish and inconsiderate
behaviour towards Aston results in him being asked
to leave. Davies’ attempts to gain favour with Mick
prove fruitless and his position seems doomed. |
